What it is

BBQ Pit Boys SPG is a versatile all-purpose BBQ rub with a sweet-savoury, garlicky and peppery flavour profile. While SPG typically stands for salt, pepper and garlic, BBQ Pit Boys SPG also includes sugar, ginger, chilli powder, dried onion, anise seeds and paprika. The result is a more aromatic and slightly sweeter flavour profile than a classic SPG blend. BBQ Pit Boys SPG works on steaks, burgers, brisket, pork, chicken, lamb, fish, potatoes and grilled vegetables. In BBQ Pit Boys’ own recipes, the SPG rub is used on chicken wings, beef roast, pork, burgers and leg of lamb, among other things. It can be used as a standalone seasoning or as a savoury, garlicky base layer beneath a sweeter BBQ rub.

We would reach for BBQ Pit Boys SPG first on burgers, steaks, chicken thighs and roast potatoes. It is not quite your standard three-ingredient SPG — the sugar, ginger, anise and paprika add a good deal more depth. Because the blend already contains both sugar and salt, we would not add extra salt to the meat, and over strong direct heat we would keep an eye on it during browning.
