Hot Shit salsa

What it is

Hot Shit Salsa is a tomato-based, freshly limey and properly spicy salsa in which jalapeño and habanero deliver a noticeable but enjoyable heat. Hot Shit Salsa is part of Big Cock Ranch’s Special Shit Seasonings range, which started out as Dani’s home rub and grew, at customers’ insistence, into a full lineup of rubs, sauces and salsas. Tomato, onion, coriander, garlic and lime juice give the salsa its classic Tex-Mex character, balanced by a small amount of sugar. The maker created Hot Shit Salsa with the aim of offering a hot salsa that wouldn’t numb your mouth or drown out the flavour of the other ingredients. Hot Shit Salsa works alongside tortilla and corn chips, tacos, nachos, burritos, and minced meat and rice dishes. The maker also uses Hot Shit Salsa in a skillet dish with beef or turkey mince, rice and cheese, and recommends using any leftovers as a burrito filling.

We’d put Hot Shit Salsa on the table alongside tortilla chips, tacos and burgers. The habanero gives it a proper kick, but the tomato, lime and coriander keep the flavour fresh and balanced. If straight salsa feels a bit fierce, there’s no need to tough it out — cream cheese or soured cream will make it considerably more approachable in no time.
